Triple Down

Friday, June 29, 2007 by NBX Crew

It's Friday and you're dickin around when the boss ain't looking. So, your pal Sweet Lou here did some diggin to help you kill some time. Here are my three favorite links of the week...
...

...
The fellas at With Leather claim that Maria Sharapova doesn't give them a chubby. I'm willing to bet that if they had 5 minutes alone with that broad in the Winnebago above, somebody's boxers wouldn't pass a CheckMate test.
...
Deadspin's impressed by the powerful effect Woody Paige appears to have on women. I thought ESPN  made you turn in your balls when you became a host of one of their shows. But, if the allegations are true, what do you expect from a guy named Woody?
......
The guys at Home Run Derby weigh in on Barry's mistress and her tell-all book. All I know is that any hot little minx that's willing to take her clothes off is OK by me.

Throwin Heat - Giants

Thursday, June 28, 2007 by Dave Stewart

As I said back in April, Bochy's a good manager, and there are a lot of players on this team that I like. However, the Giants are dead last in the NL West right now. They're even below the Rockies, which says it all, because Colorado reserves last place in that division every year before the season even starts...
....
Zgvm8hkw Pitching... Earlier this season, their bullpen was holding them back, but now they're doing a decent job. In fact, the Giants have the 9th best team ERA in the majors currently. Zito's been a flop this year, and Lincecum needs more time in triple A. However, they've got three good starters in Morris, Cain and Lowry. Morris is 7 and 4 with a 3.39ERA, and Lowry's 7 and 6 with a 3.61ERA. Cain has the best ERA of all the starters at 3.38, but the offense must be going to sleep when he pitches because he's only 2 and 9.
...

Hitting... The Giants have the third worst batting average, and the fifth fewest runs scored in the majors right now. They've also got the third fewest number of hits, and the fifth fewest RBIs. San Francisco simply isn't getting enough production offensively... their offense is in a coma.
...
Bottom line... The best thing about the Giants right now is Barry Bonds. However, if you've got three starters that are putting up the numbers that Morris, Cain and Lowry are, you should be playing better. If this offense doesn't step-up, San Francisco's looking at their third losing season in a row.

Throwin Heat - Fossils

Wednesday, June 27, 2007 by Dave Stewart

There are seven pitchers who are over the age of 40 starting today. That's a whole lot of experience taking the mound. However, being a starting pitcher in the majors is demanding. I was able to avoid the DL until I was 36, but decided to retire at 38 in part because I was getting worn out physically. So, for these guys to still be out there in their 40s is an accomplishment in itself. Here are my thoughts on the veterans who'll be on the mound today...
....
Pa_jamie_moyer PHI: Jamie Moyer (44)... [Career: 223-171, 4.16ERA] Pitching until you're 44 and being effective is pretty darn good. Moyer's always been a slow, slow and slower guy... just below hitting speed. Jamie's pitched the same way for his entire career, and the key to his success has been to work the strike zone. He's not a hall of famer, but he's developed an art of getting people out without having overpowering stuff.
...

NYY: Roger Clemens (44)... [Career: 349-180, 3.11ERA] When Roger was young he could strike anyone out with his fastball, and still has the best stuff of all the 40-somethings. However, he's made some adjustments over the years, and now gets the majority of his strikeouts using offspeed pitches. Clemens definitely belongs in the Hall of Fame.
...
DET: Kenny Rogers (42)...
[Career: 208-139, 4.18ERA] Kenny's a crafty lefty. When he was younger he threw at a higher velocity, but as he's gotten older he's become more of a finesse guy. Despite his longevity, Rogers won't make it into the Hall of Fame.
...
SD: Greg Maddux (41)...
[Career: 339-207, 3.08ERA] Some guys are throwers, especially early on in their careers, but Maddux has always been a pitcher. He counts on movement to get people out, and has never compromised control for velocity. Pitching at a lower speed than he can has helped his longevity and effectiveness, and will make him a Hall of Famer.
...
NYM: Tom Glavine (41)...
[Career: 296-196, 3.48ERA] Tom's always been a smart pitcher. As he's gotten older he's changed his pitching style, and is now very effective inside. Glavine will make it into the Hall of Fame.
...
HOU: Woody Williams (40)...
[Career: 127-111, 4.16ERA] I've known Woody for a long time. He's a great competitor who'll give you everything he's got. However, the battles have really taken a toll on his body, and he's spent a lot of time on the DL over the years. Williams isn't a Hall of Famer, but he's a great communicator. Of all the guys on this list I think he'd make the best pitching coach.
...
ATL: John Smoltz (40)...
[Career: 201-141, 3.27ERA] John's still a true power guy, and is really close to Clemens in terms of stuff. He hasn't changed his pitching style much, but he hasn't really had to because he still has one of the nastiest sliders in the majors today. There's a chance Smoltz will get into the Hall of Fame eventually.
...
Bottom line... there are trade-offs having older pitchers in your starting rotation. Their stuff might not be as good as it once was, but hopefully they pitch smarter and share some of their experience with the younger members of the pitching staff.

Zito

Tuesday, June 26, 2007 by Hot Rod

Stew called it back in March... Zito is having a "down year". Barry went 16-10, with a 3.83 ERA with Oakland in 2006. So far this season, he's 6-8, with a 4.83 ERA with the Giants. Perhaps he's having a tough time against all the good breaking ball hitters in the National League, or maybe he's spending a little too much time barking with the seals...
...

...
Either way, Zito's been struggling in his last three starts, going 0-3 with a monstrous 10.12 ERA, and a 1.88 WHIP. Barry's taking the mound tonight at home against the Padres, and San Francisco's favored. However, Zito's 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA, and a 1.65 WHIP, in three career starts against San Diego... including his Giants debut when he gave up three earned runs in five innings in a 7-0 opening day loss. I'm sure the $126 million man will get back on track eventually, but I definitely won't be riding the Giants tonight.
