Before today's A's/Rangers game, the Oakland A's will honor Vida Blue, Mike Norris, Jim
"Mudcat" Grant, and myself... four of the 13 African-American 20-game winners in
Major League history. The other nine are... Don Newcombe, Sam Jones, Bob Gibson, Earl Wilson, Ferguson Jenkins, Al Downing, J.R. Richard, Dwight Gooden, and Dontrelle Willis. ....
Winning 20 games in one season is becoming more and more rare, and is a magic number that all pitchers should aspire to reach. However, since there have been relatively few African-American pitchers in the game, many of the 13 of us who have achieved this milestone have inspired others in the group. Dontrelle Willis has said that I was an inspiration for him, and I can tell you that Mike Norris, Al Downing, Vida Blue, Bob Gibson and Fergie Jenkins all directly affected my performance. In fact, I was drafted out of high school by the Dodgers as a catcher, and Mike Norris took the time in the off-season to teach me a lot about the mechanics of pitching. ... Mudcat wrote a book about our individual stories**. For example, I tell about how my friendship with Reggie Jackson started. When I was 13 or 14 I rode my bike from my house to Oakland Coliseum, hopped the fence, and sat in right field before the gates opened. Reggie saw me sitting there, asked me what I was doing, and told me I could get busted for not buying a ticket. We started talking, and after that he started leaving tickets for me and giving me rides to and from the games. ... This is an elite fraternity that I'm proud to be a part of and I'm hoping we'll serve as an inspiration to young African-Americans for years to come. ... ** In 2006, Grant authored "Black Aces: Baseball's Only
African-American 20-Game Winners." The book not only details the 20-win
seasons of the 13 African American pitchers, but it also examines the
lives of 10 Negro League pitchers who might have won 20 games in the
Majors if not for baseball's color barrier. In addition, it details
several topics, including the integration of African Americans into
baseball in America, the prejudice and hardships faced by the pitchers
and their road to success. More information on the book is available
online at theblackaces.com. ... Dave Stewart is NBX.com's

The hype surrounding Roger's return may be warranted, but I still think it's a joke. A guy who's almost 45 years old and about to be added to the starting rotation of a major league club is newsworthy. However, lengthy coverage and discussion of how he pitched in a Triple-A game yesterday, against poor competition, is over the top. ...
I've got nothing against Roger. As I've said before, he belongs in the Hall of Fame, and like Nolan Ryan has become a better pitcher in some ways as he's gotten older. As Nolan got older he still had a great fastball, and also developed a good breaking ball. Roger has done the same with his fork ball, but unfortunately for the Yankees, I still don't think he's going to be very effective. ... I can understand the "never quit" attitude the Yankees have, but if Roger really wanted to help this organization why wasn't he there at the beginning of the season? I also like Joe Torre and think he's done a great job with this ball club. New York's got some great players, but their bullpen has been struggling and overall they're simply not playing very good baseball. ... The Yankees definitely have the bats, but even with Clemens they don't have the pitching necessary to win their division or pick up a Wild Card spot. The Yankees are tied for last in the AL East with the Devil Rays right now and unless something catastrophic happens, the Red Sox are going to win that division. New York will have a winning season, but before the decision makers in that organization paid 28 million dollars for Roger they should have asked themselves three questions... 1) "Can we play well enough this season to realistically compete for an AL Wild Card spot?"... 2) "Can a guy going on 45 years old, entering our starting rotation 2 months into the season, pull us out of an extreme situation?"... 3) "Is it worth $28 million to sign a guy like Clemens who isn't a true team player and does whatever he wants?" The truthful answer to all three questions would have been... "Hell no". ... Bottom line... perhaps baseball and the media are trying to create other big stories
to upstage Bonds. If so, here's one for them... "What were the Yankees thinking signing Roger Clemens this season?". ... Dave Stewart is NBX.com's

Another week of major league action has come to a close. Some teams are streaking upwards, and others are heading south. The Angels and Padres have each won 8 of their last 10, while the Astros have only notched one "W", and the Reds have only come out on top twice in their last 10 games. ...
But, what's more important is that we crowned another weekly winner in my Battle of the Blogs contest. The champ for the second week in a row was gbdawg82, who
went 10-2 and racked up an impressive 34,823 points! Here are a few words from the champ... ... "This week, I rode the Angels as they continued to live up to their
Yankee-killer status by sweeping the Yankees at Yankee stadium. It's
unbelievable how good the Angels are against the Yankees. In case you
didn't know, the Angels are the only team to have a winning record
against the Yankees in the Joe Torre era. I made sure to take advantage
of this, racking up close to 21,000 points by laying down plenty of
action on the Angels." ... The runner-up was AlCantHang, who went 10-7 for the week in his picks and won 14,224 points. ... Rounding out the top three was BaseballEvolutio, who went 15-7 in his predictions and picked up 11,246 points. ... And, congrats to the top 3 finishers in Dave Stewart's Baseball Weekly contest... Tom Parilla (again), hitthere, and umpiregod. Those three players, as well as everyone else who finished in the top 25 of that contest, have earned a chance to play in
NBX's 2007 MLB World Sports Betting Championships. ... Good luck to all of our bloggers in the Battle of the Blogs, and to all of you playing in the Baseball Weekly contest this week. ...... Dave Stewart is NBX.com's
